2016 Christmas Island Trip (Kiribati)

We went to Christmas Island operate ham radio during a 48 hour All Asia Contest to see how many people we can contact.

Christmas Island (Kiritimati) <<“TI” is pronounces like an “S”>> is one of three island groups in the equatorial Pacific that comprises the Republic of Kiribati. As you can see on the map, Kiribati spans about 3,000 miles from Tarawa (the capital island) to Christmas (the easternmost and largest atoll). Flights go there only once a week.

The lodging was minimal as it is mostly geared towards fisherman. We three were the only guests there that week. Diet is mostly fish and shellfish. Meat and veggies are very limited as almost all of it has to be imported from Australia or New Zealand.

Later we visited London, about 5 miles away. It’s the capital of Christmas Island and is more of a village with unpaved roads. We were invited to visit Lisa our guide’s home. A grass sleeping shack, communal outdoor cooking and dining.
